Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge Technology for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.

Replay technology will make its debut at Wimbledon this year.

Players will gain the ability to question specific calls from the chair umpire, following the practice already in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development comes just a year after the All England Club rolled out ELC, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine other situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Notably, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a player can initiate.

A Recent Example

A recent case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a video and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further change at The Championships this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
