Pat Cummins Poised for a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

Pat Cummins has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chair of selectors Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on 21 November in Perth.

The selector shared that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the prospects of taking part.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and various factors involved, not just his injury, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he's going to play a significant role. Hopefully it's the first Test. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from several home seasons in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the contest.

Bailey noted that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and stated that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the initial game as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches regardless. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for a short period, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
