Approximately fifty automobiles have been covered with what seems to be blood from a person in the German town of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Cars, building surfaces and postboxes were vandalized, occasionally with swastikas, they announced in a statement.
Officers state they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a resident discovered that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish liquid.
The liquid had been placed in the pattern of a Nazi symbol, they added.
Police then discovered multiple other smeared automobiles and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under laws banning the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police report preliminary tests indicate the liquid was likely human blood.
"At present there remains no indication as to its origin; authorities are not yet cognizant of any harm in association with the incident," they stated.
Local authorities stated they were trying "to resolve the mystery" and have appealed to the public for tips.
An important representative commented the vandalism rendered him speechless and had to be solved quickly.
"This incident strikes at the core of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the far-right attack half a decade ago," he stated on a platform, referring to the death of nine individuals by a gunman targeting people of foreign heritage in February 2020.
